E-file Forms 1099 with the IRS via IRIS

The IRS allows you to e-file information returns for the tax year of 2022 and later with the Information Returns Intake System (IRIS).   SkySlope Books offers the ability for brokerages to download the IRIS 1099 for uploading into the IRIS system.

Note: We do not support the IRS FIRE system.  

Step One: Apply for TCC Code and Create an Account

Important:  You will need to apply for an IRIS Transmitter Control Code (TCC) before you can use the IRIS Taxpayer Portal!  We recommend you do this 30-60 days prior to tax season.

Step Two: Run the 1099-NEC report

The high-level steps are listed below, learn all details about 1099-NEC preparation by viewing the 1099 Reporting article

1. Log into SkySlope Books

2. Navigate to Reporting > Detailed Reports

3. Click Create Report > Financial Reports > 1099-NEC  

4. Select the appropriate options for Time Period, Entity, Form Pages, and Pdf Generation and then click Save & Run Report

5. Name the report (required) and categorize (optional) and then click Save

6. Make any edits, if needed

Step Three: Download IRIS 1099 from SkySlope Books

1. Click on the Actions dropdown in the top right-hand corner

2. Select Download IRIS CSV

3. Save to the appropriate folder and then upload to the IRIS account created per IRS instructions

Step Four: Submit to the IRS via IRIS

Click here to access the IRS site.

1. After clicking on the link above, you will be taken to the "E-file information returns with IRIS" page.
2. Scroll down to the Sign In section. Click on Sign in to the IRIS Taxpayer Portal.
3. Click on Sign in with ID.me or click Create Account if you haven't created an ID.me account yet.
4. Once logged in, you will land on the Select Your Organization page. You will see options for Individual and Organization Roles. Click Select to select the applicable Organization.
5. On the next page, you will see several different options. Select Upload CSV with Form data.
6. Under Upload File, click Browse. Then locate and select the CSV you downloaded from SkySlope Books.
7. Click Start.
8. If the CSV is formatted correctly and uploaded successfully, you will land on the Review Form Information page.
   On the right side of the page, you can scroll through the uploaded information for each individual. If you need to remove a line-item, click the trash can icon.
9. Click Add All. Proceed until you are able to submit via IRIS.
